Croatian cuisine is very diverse and depending on where in Croatia you decide to visit you may find the cuisine being very different, hence the alias cuisine of regions. Taking a look at modern day food in Zadar is easy to notice a lot of variety in the ingredients used for cooking and also the way food is prepared and the different cooking methods used, this is most apparent when comparing cuisine from the mainland Zadar and the coastal islands and regions.
Cuisine in the coastal areas of Croatia is mainly and quite obviously influenced by Roman, Illyrian and Greek cuisine and shares a lot in common with both the ingredients used and the way food is cooked. Looking at cuisine on the mainland of Zadar and most of Croatia it is apparent that the major influences here differ and are mostly Turkish and Hungarian. Depending on where you visit you may also notice some Mediterranean flavouring also.

When visiting Zadar you should definitely look forward to tasting some Croatian cuisine. Like a lot of Mediterranean regions cooking is taken very seriously and it is important to have food prepared correctly to their high standards and all the ingredients are as fresh as possible.
Bearing resemblance to Italian cooking, a lot of regions in Croatia focus on straightforward food with fresh simple ingredients; this simplicity certainly does not distract from the taste. When eating out in Zadar, as a majority of the food is fairly simple the price certainly does not hurt your wallet and you will always find the atmosphere very friendly and relaxing.
Beverages, especially wine also vary from region to region. In the north-west region of Croatia the most popular alcoholic beverage is ‘Gemisht’, this is a dry wine diluted with mineral water. However, when visiting the south the most common wine is ‘Bevanda’ which is a weighty rich red wine diluted with water. Although there are approximately 700 different wines all locally sourced there is still plenty of variety in drinks like brandy, beer, juice and mineral water.
